How to Prepare for your New Kitten

Here’s what comes with your new kitten.

This is an example of a typical go-home bag that you’ll receive when you pick up your kitten.

Although some of the bits and bobs may differ, you will always receive a bag of Life’s Abundance kibble (should last a few weeks!), a can of wet food, a sack of pelleted litter, a blanket, leash and collar, a greyhound comb, nail nippers, and a myriad of toys! A go-home folder will include your contract, your kitten’s complete medical records to date, helpful information regarding Trupanion medical insurance and your free 30 day coverage offer as well as helpful information.

Feeding

How we feed our kittens and cats

We provide Life’s Abundance dry kibble food 24/7 to all of our cats and kittens. This is an ALL-STAGE food, so it’s great for both kittens and adults!

Once each day, we feed our adult cats approximately ½ can of the small (3.5 oz) cans of Fancy Feast (any meat paté) variety. We mix this with at least ¼ cup of water to make a thin soup-like portion. Since the dry food is complete in terms of nutrition, we feed this wet mixture primarily for hydration. If you choose to feed the Life’s Abundance canned food, I would feed approximately 1/4 of a can (5.5 oz) once a day and water it down just like the Fancy Feast. Kittens can have the same amount of the wet mixture as well as unlimited dry food.

Litter

We use a bit of a different set-up as far as the litter we use for moms and litters versus our “loose in the house” kittens and cats.

Your kitten has been, so far, raised using the “pelleted-litter” way. We use a natural pine pellet litter that is a gentle, non chemical way of acclimating them to using a litter box. We’ve found that the Tractor Supply Co. Pelleted bedding is the best and most economical choice. See the photo for reference. We use this form of litter while they are being raised here.

Throughout our home, we use Fresh Step clumping litter (we prefer the Extreme or Hawaiian Scent).

The kittens will come with a bag of pellets that will last you plenty of time until you decide which litter type you want to use, whether pellets or clumping. Your kitten will transfer easily to clumping, should you decide to change.
